Percentage formulas with examples
To find X% of a number, multiply the number by X and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 80 is 80 × 15 / 100 = 12. To find what percent A is of B, divide A by B and multiply by 100: 30 out of 120 is 30 / 120 × 100 = 25%.
Percentage change compares a new value with an old one: (new − old) / old × 100. If a price goes from $50 to $60, that's (60 − 50) / 50 × 100 = a 20% increase. If the result is negative, it's a decrease.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100. The 'Percentage Change' calculator does this for you automatically.
How do I find what percent one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. Use the 'X is what % of Y' calculator to get the answer instantly.
Is a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease the same as no change?
No. 100 increased by 50% is 150, and 150 decreased by 50% is 75. Each percentage applies to a different starting value.
What's the difference between percent and percentage points?
Going from 10% to 12% is a rise of 2 percentage points, but a 20% increase relative to the starting 10%.
