Enter a list of numbers separated by commas, spaces, or new lines to instantly calculate the count, sum, mean (average), median, mode, minimum, and maximum.

Mean, median and mode with an example

Take the numbers 2, 4, 4, 5 and 10. The mean (the usual 'average') is the sum divided by the count: 25 / 5 = 5. The median is the middle value when sorted, which is 4. The mode is the most frequent value, also 4. The range is the largest minus the smallest: 10 − 2 = 8.

The median is often more useful than the mean when a few values are much larger or smaller than the rest. That's why house prices and incomes are usually reported as medians: a handful of very high values would pull the mean up.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the sum of all numbers divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value once they're sorted, and it's less thrown off by extreme outliers.

What if there's no repeated number for the mode?

If every number appears exactly once, there is no mode, and the calculator shows 'None'.

How do I find the median of an even number of values?

Sort the values and take the mean of the two middle ones. For 1, 3, 5, 7 the median is (3 + 5) / 2 = 4.

Can I paste a column from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Values on separate lines are read as separate numbers.
