UUID Generator
Generate random version 4 UUIDs (GUIDs) for testing and development.
How to use the uuid generator
- Choose how many UUIDs to generate (up to 50).
- Press Generate.
- Press Copy all to copy every UUID to your clipboard, one per line.
Generate one or many random version 4 UUIDs (also called GUIDs), commonly used as unique identifiers in databases, APIs, and software testing. Generated using your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator.
What a UUID looks like and where it's used
A UUID is a 128-bit identifier written as 32 hexadecimal characters in five groups, like 3f2b8c1e-7a4d-4e9f-b6c2-1d5e8a9f0b37. In a version 4 UUID, almost all of those bits are random, and the 13th character is always 4.
Developers use UUIDs as database keys, API request IDs, file names and test data, because they can be created anywhere without checking a central list and are practically guaranteed to be unique.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between UUID and GUID?
They're basically the same thing. GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) is Microsoft's term, UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is the general standard, and both refer to the same 128-bit identifier format.
How unique is a version 4 UUID?
Version 4 UUIDs come from random bits, and the odds of a collision are astronomically low, practically negligible for real-world use.
Can two UUIDs ever be the same?
In theory yes, but the chance is so small it's ignored in practice. You'd need to generate billions of UUIDs per second for many years to expect a single collision.
Are UUIDs safe to use as secret tokens?
They're unique but not designed as secrets. For passwords or security tokens, use a dedicated generator like the password generator.
