Why it's on November 11
The fighting in World War I stopped at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, when the armistice with Germany took effect. The day was first marked in the US as Armistice Day in 1919.
In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress renamed it Veterans Day so it would honor everyone who served. For a few years in the 1970s it was moved to a Monday in October, but so many people complained that it went back to November 11 in 1978.
Veterans Day is for everyone who has served in the military, living or dead. Memorial Day, in May, is specifically for those who died in service.
