How a groundhog became a weather forecaster
The idea goes back to Candlemas, a Christian feast on February 2. An old European saying held that a sunny Candlemas meant more winter ahead. German settlers in Pennsylvania brought the custom with them and swapped the hedgehog or badger they used back home for the local groundhog.
The first official Groundhog Day at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, was in 1887. If Phil sees his shadow, there are six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't, spring comes early.
The 1993 film with Bill Murray made the day famous far beyond Pennsylvania, and the phrase groundhog day now means living the same day over and over. As for accuracy, Phil's record is roughly a coin flip.
