How February 14 became about love
There were at least two early Christian martyrs named Valentine, and very little is known for certain about either of them. The romantic part came much later. Geoffrey Chaucer's poem Parliament of Fowls, from the 1380s, is the first known text to tie St. Valentine's Day to lovers, with birds choosing their mates on that day.
By the 1700s people in England were trading handwritten notes, and in the 1840s Esther Howland in Massachusetts started selling mass-produced valentines with lace and ribbons. She's often called the mother of the American valentine.
Japan does it differently. On February 14 women give chocolate to men, and on White Day, March 14, men are expected to return the favor.
