Why March 17
March 17 is traditionally the date St. Patrick died, sometime in the 5th century. He wasn't Irish by birth. He was born in Roman Britain, kidnapped as a teenager and taken to Ireland as a slave, escaped, and later came back as a missionary.
The parades started outside Ireland. Irish soldiers serving in the British army marched through New York in 1762, years before the United States existed. Chicago has been dyeing its river green since 1962, and it only takes about 40 pounds of dye to do it.
In Ireland, it's a public holiday. If March 17 falls during Holy Week, the Catholic Church moves the religious feast to another day, but the parades and the pubs stay on the 17th.
