The history behind Juneteenth
On June 19, 1865, Union general Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people in the state were free. The Emancipation Proclamation had been signed more than two years earlier, but it couldn't be enforced in places still under Confederate control.
Formerly enslaved people in Texas started celebrating the date the next year, and the tradition spread as families moved to other states. The name is simply June and nineteenth put together.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday in June 2021, the first new one since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was added in 1983.
