How Earth Day started
The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin pushed for a national teach-in on the environment after seeing the damage from a big oil spill off Santa Barbara the year before. About 20 million Americans took part.
It had real results. Within a few years the US created the Environmental Protection Agency and passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act.
Earth Day went international in 1990, and today it's marked in more than 190 countries. The Paris climate agreement was signed on Earth Day in 2016.
