What Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates
A lot of people assume it's Mexican Independence Day. It isn't. That's September 16. Cinco de Mayo marks the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when a smaller Mexican army beat French troops who had invaded the country.
The French came back and took Mexico City a year later, so the battle didn't end the war. It mattered because nobody expected Mexico to win, and it became a symbol of resistance.
The holiday is a much bigger deal in the US than in Mexico. In Mexico, it's mostly celebrated in the state of Puebla, with parades and battle reenactments, while north of the border it turned into a celebration of Mexican-American culture in general.
