Why the US celebrates on July 4
The Continental Congress actually voted for independence on July 2, 1776. John Adams was sure July 2 would be the big day. The 4th won because that's the date the final wording of the Declaration of Independence was approved, and it's the date printed at the top.
In a strange coincidence, Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826, exactly fifty years after the Declaration was adopted. James Monroe died on July 4 five years later.
Congress made Independence Day a federal holiday in 1870, and in 1941 it became a paid holiday for federal workers.
