Convert any whole number from 1 to 3999 into Roman numerals, or convert a Roman numeral back into a regular number. Comes up for clock faces, book chapters, and Super Bowl numbering.

How Roman numerals work

Roman numerals use seven letters: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000. You usually add the values from left to right, so VIII = 8 and LX = 60.

When a smaller value comes before a larger one, it's subtracted instead: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400 and CM = 900. So 2024 is MMXXIV (2000 + 20 + 4). Roman numerals are still used for years in film credits, clock faces, book chapters and Super Bowl numbers.
