  3. Check word and line counts alongside the character total.
  4. Use Clear to reset the box.

Instantly count the number of characters in your text, with and without spaces, plus word and line counts. Good for checking limits on tweets, bios, meta descriptions, and form fields.

Common character limits

Many platforms limit text by characters, not words. A post on X (Twitter) allows 280 characters, an Instagram caption 2,200, an Instagram bio 150, and a single SMS text message 160. A TikTok bio fits 80 characters.

For websites, Google usually shows about 50 to 60 characters of a page title and 150 to 160 characters of a meta description before cutting them off. Checking the count before you publish keeps your text from being truncated.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a character?

Every letter, number, punctuation mark, and space is counted as one character. Use the 'without spaces' count to exclude spaces.

Can I use this to check a social media post limit?

Yes, it's a quick way to check if your text fits within a specific character limit before posting.

Do spaces count as characters?

Usually yes. Most platforms, including X and SMS, count spaces. That's why this tool shows the count both with and without spaces.

Do emojis count as one character?

Not always. Many emojis are stored as two or more characters behind the scenes, so some platforms count them as 2.
